Once you’ve decided on color, you can then decide on formatting of the hardwood flooring planks. Bois Chamois can provide custom widths up to seven inches. The boards can also be finished with oil or wax. A wax finish is easy to maintain. After the initial waxing and buffing, you just need to annually (more or less often depending on traffic) and buff to a shine. The oil finish is a bit more involved at installation, but is maintained by cleaning with a simple soap mixture. Both methods help to permeate and protect color if it has been applied as well as works as a barrier to moisture.

Not so with Mountain Lumber. This company started in 1974 with a man who just wanted some antique wood for a new house he was building. What was actually built from that day forward was much bigger than just one house.

Willie Drake, the founder of Mountain Lumber, took a look around the countryside in West Virginia, where he had gone to on his search, and he was inspired. He decided there was a treasure trove of materials sitting in the old barns, houses, and other structures that dotted the countryside. So he began to remove the wood from these often dilapidated buildings and, referred to as “reclaiming,” recut, refitted, and resurfaced these pieces to create some of the best antique wood flooring on the market.
